Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine views each of us as individuals that are both genetically and biochemically uniquely different. Unlike traditional medicine, Functional Medicine treatment protocols take an approach to treat the individual and not the disease. Traditional medical practitioners are trained to treat acute conditions including heart attacks, burns, flu, and asthma, among others, with medication. The methodology of treatment is simple; diagnose a disease and match that disease with a corresponding drug. Presto, patient’s symptoms controlled! Unfortunately, chronic conditions like allergic, digestive, hormonal metabolic and neurological problems often do not respond well to traditional methods of treatment.

Functional Medicine’s Approach

By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine treats the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. It seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease. Functional medicine views the body as one integrated system, not a collection of independent organs divided up by medical specialties. It treats the whole system, not just the symptoms.

Patient-Centered Care

Functional medicine integrates traditional medical practices with natural medicine, “alternative” or “integrative”, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise. Laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques are employed on an “as-needed” basis. Some of the services we offer are:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Genomic Testing & Genomic Nutrition
  • Heavy Metal Detoxification
  • Bredesen Protocol (Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment)
  • NeuroCognitive Testing
